Pest Control in York County, Maine
York County holds more seasonal homes than Cumberland: the U.S. Census Bureau's 2020–2024 survey counts 18,703 units held for seasonal or occasional use, about one in six. Pest work here splits between closed-up coastal houses, where mice settle over winter, and year-round homes, where the calls are ants, wasps and ticks. Maine CDC counted 286 Lyme cases among county residents in 2024.

York County has 216,731 residents by the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 count, and it contains two quite different kinds of housing. Thousands of its houses are used for only part of the year; most of the rest are year-round homes, from pre-war multi-unit buildings to mobile homes. The pest work follows the building, so this page is organized around the figures that describe it.

More summer houses than Cumberland
The Census Bureau counts 18,703 York County homes held for seasonal, recreational or occasional use — about one housing unit in six, and more than Cumberland County’s 15,786, even though Cumberland has roughly 90,000 more residents. The share varies a great deal by town. In Kennebunkport the survey estimates about 30% of units are seasonal; in Kennebunk, next door, it is closer to 15%, and most homes there are owner-occupied and lived in year-round.
A closed-up house is where mice do best: months of quiet, furniture and mattresses to nest in, and nobody to notice droppings until the first weekend back. The visit that saves money is the one before closing, with the sill, utility entries, garage door seals and roofline checked and exterior stations set. Rodent exclusion covers how sealing work is itemized, and attic clean-outs handle insulation that rodents have already soiled.
Year-round homes, rentals and older buildings
Most of the county’s 91,413 occupied homes are lived in by their owners; 22.7% are rented, by the Census Bureau’s count. About one unit in five sits in a building of two or more units, and 22,926 units — 19.9% — were built before 1940. Older buildings that have been rewired and re-plumbed over the decades carry gaps around every line that passes through the shell, and in a multi-unit building those gaps connect one apartment to the next.
That is where bed bugs and German cockroaches become a building problem rather than one household’s. We inspect the units that share walls, floors and ceilings with the one that reported the problem before writing a plan, and in a Maine rental, 14 M.R.S. §6021-A sets out what the landlord and tenant each have to do once bed bugs are reported.
The survey also counts 7,046 mobile homes in the county, 6.1% of its housing. A mobile home’s skirting and the open space beneath the floor are the usual way in for mice and rats, and the fix is mostly outside: closing the skirting, filling burrows and setting secured stations.
For owner-occupied houses on wooded lots, the steady calls are carpenter ants in damp framing, wasps and hornets in eaves and sheds over the summer, and a residential pest control plan that comes back through the season.
Ticks in the county where Maine’s Lyme story began
Maine CDC’s 2024 tickborne illness report notes that in the 1990s the great majority of the state’s Lyme cases were among residents of south coastal Maine, principally York County. Today the highest rates are in the Midcoast and Downeast. On the report’s preliminary figures, York County recorded 286 Lyme cases in 2024, a rate of 129.9 per 100,000 against 230.0 statewide. That was down from 331 cases in 2023, while the statewide total rose 8% — but the 2024 rate is still nearly double the 67.9 the county recorded in 2020. The same report lists 79 anaplasmosis cases, 17 babesiosis cases, three hard tick relapsing fever cases and one Powassan virus case among county residents.
The UMaine Cooperative Extension Tick Lab received 326 blacklegged ticks from York County in 2025. Of the 318 it tested, 133 (42.0%) carried the Lyme bacterium, 39 (12.3%) the babesiosis agent and 25 (7.9%) the anaplasmosis agent. Four carried Powassan virus, a 1.3% share that only Sagadahoc County exceeded. Those ticks were sent in by the public, so the figures describe what is circulating rather than measuring it.
Tick control treats the yard edge where lawn meets leaf litter and brush, on a schedule from spring into the fall adult peak, and the ticks in the yard page lists the habitat changes that help it hold.

Lyme cases in York County went down in 2024. Are ticks less of a worry?
One year's drop is not a trend, and the rate is still almost double the county's 2020 figure. The UMaine Tick Lab found the Lyme bacterium in 42.0% of the county's blacklegged ticks it tested in 2025, slightly above the statewide share.
When should I book work on a summer house?
Before you close it in the fall. Sealed gaps and exterior stations protect a house through the months it stands empty; a check when you reopen confirms whether they held.
