Pest Control in Brunswick, Maine
Brunswick's rentals are concentrated in its built-up core. The Census Bureau counts 2,566 renter households in the town, and 2,396 of them are in the Brunswick census-designated place, where a third of homes are rented. Most Bowdoin students live in college housing rather than town apartments, so the rental pest work here is ordinary apartment work: shared walls, older buildings and bed bugs moving between units.

Brunswick is a market we have chosen to grow into, and we have not yet worked a job here. What we can offer before that first job is a clear read of the town’s housing from the public record, and the approach we would bring to it.
Where Brunswick’s rentals actually are
The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey for 2020–2024 counts 22,336 residents and 9,523 housing units in the town of Brunswick. Of 8,913 occupied homes, 2,566 are rented, or 28.8%. The town-wide number hides where those rentals sit.
The Census also reports a Brunswick census-designated place, the more built-up area within the town. There, 2,396 of 7,107 occupied homes are rented, a third of the total. Put the two figures side by side and 93.4% of Brunswick’s renter households are inside that core. The same area holds 1,609 of the town’s 1,860 housing units built before 1940.
So the rental work in Brunswick is concentrated, and it is concentrated in old buildings.
What about the college?
It would be easy to assume a college town’s rentals are student rentals. The numbers do not support that here. Bowdoin College’s off-campus housing policy says all first-year and sophomore students must live on campus and that only a limited number of juniors and seniors are permitted off campus, with approval required before a student signs a lease.
Students in residence halls show up in the Census as group quarters, not as households. Brunswick has 2,342 people in group quarters on the 2020–2024 survey, which is a category that also covers nursing homes and similar shared living, so not all of them are students. What it does mean is that the town’s 2,566 renter households are mostly year-round tenants. A bed bug call from a Brunswick apartment is a building problem, with neighbors on the other side of the wall, not a dorm problem.
How a Brunswick apartment job is scoped
The survey counts 1,095 Brunswick units in two-, three- and four-unit buildings and another 1,346 in buildings of five units or more. In either kind of building, bed bugs and German cockroaches travel along plumbing chases, through wall voids and under doors. A unit that reports a problem is often not the first one affected.
When we take on a multi-unit job, the scope covers:
- The unit that reported, and every unit sharing a wall, floor or ceiling with it
- Treatment dates for each confirmed unit, done in the same window
- A follow-up round, scheduled before the first visit ends
- Preparation instructions for each household, in writing
- A record of any unit we could not access, and why
That last item is the one that explains a building where activity keeps coming back. The bed bug control and cockroach control pages describe the treatments themselves, and commercial pest control covers multi-unit and property-management accounts.
What Maine law asks of landlords and tenants
Bed bugs in a Maine rental come with statutory deadlines. Section 6021-A of Title 14 gives a landlord five days from a tenant’s report to inspect, and ten days from confirmation to contact a pest control agent who is certified and carries liability insurance. Tenants must report what they suspect, allow access on reasonable notice and follow the control measures, and a tenant who unreasonably fails to comply can be held financially responsible for the treatments that result. We are licensed and insured, and our written scopes are built around those dates.
Houses, mobile homes and mice
Outside the core, Brunswick looks more like its neighbors. The Census counts 4,985 detached houses, 52.3% of all units, and 1,197 mobile homes. Mice in a detached house usually come in low, at the sill, the bulkhead or a worn garage door seal. Under a mobile home it is the skirting and the floor penetrations. Either way, the work is finding the openings and closing them, which the rodent control page walks through.
Ticks in Cumberland County
Brunswick is in Cumberland County, which had the most reported Lyme disease cases of any Maine county in 2024, largely because it has the most people. Maine CDC’s preliminary 2024 report records 414 cases among county residents, a rate of 131.9 per 100,000 against the statewide 230.0. The county also logged 147 anaplasmosis cases, 39 babesiosis cases and 2 Powassan virus cases that year.
The UMaine Cooperative Extension Tick Surveillance Program tested 627 blacklegged ticks from the county in 2025. It found the Lyme bacterium in 249 of them (39.7%) and Babesia microti in 71 (11.3%). Those are ticks residents chose to submit, which tells you what is circulating rather than how dense the ticks are on a given lot.
A Brunswick yard that backs onto woods or a field edge carries the most exposure. See tick control for how a season of treatment along that edge is organized.
Starting work in Brunswick
Because this is a town we are just starting in, we will be plain about what the first visit involves: an inspection, a written finding, and a quote that separates treatment from any sealing work.
The Cumberland County page covers the rest of the county, and the Topsham page covers the town across the Androscoggin.

Common questions
Is Brunswick's rental market mostly students?
The figures say no. Bowdoin requires first-years and sophomores to live on campus and limits how many juniors and seniors live off it, and the Census Bureau counts residence halls as group quarters, not rented homes. Brunswick's 2,566 renter households are mostly ordinary tenants in ordinary apartments.
I manage a few buildings in town. Can you quote across all of them?
Yes. We write a scope per building that lists the units to inspect, the treatment and follow-up dates, and any unit we could not get into. The commercial pest control page explains how multi-unit accounts are set up. A single urgent unit does not have to wait for the full scope. Same-day emergency service is available; call or text for the next opening.
What is a Brunswick landlord required to do about bed bugs?
Under 14 M.R.S. §6021-A, inspect within five days of a tenant's report and, once bed bugs are confirmed, contact a certified and insured pest control agent within ten days. The landlord must also tell a prospective tenant if a neighboring unit is infested or under treatment.
