Pest Control in Kennebec County, Maine
Kennebec County runs from two river cities with older rental housing into lake country and farmland, and the pest work follows that split: rats, mice and bed bugs in Augusta and Waterville, camps and ticks outside them. Maine CDC's 2024 figures put the county's Lyme disease rate at 229.6 per 100,000 — level with the statewide 230.0 — in what the agency calls an emerging area of increased incidence.

Kennebec County is the capital county, and it behaves like two places at once. Augusta and Waterville sit on the Kennebec River with older housing, a lot of it rented or converted into apartments. Beyond them the county opens into lakes, farmland and woodland, with camps and year-round homes on wooded lots. Both of our confirmed jobs here were in the cities, while the tick figures cover the whole county.

River cities: rats, mice and shared buildings
In Augusta and Waterville the calls cluster around older and subdivided buildings. Rats are the clearest example. The Augusta job we have on record involved rats digging beneath a trailer and getting in from below. Nothing inside the trailer would have fixed that. What worked was outside: secured bait stations placed where the rats were traveling, and the burrow entrances filled so the colony had nowhere to retreat to. The same logic applies to sheds, decks and any outbuilding sitting on soil — the rats in the basement page goes into how rats get in from the ground up.
Bed bugs are the other city problem. In Waterville a property-management company reported one unit. The inspection found that the infestation was heavy and had already reached the connecting apartments, so all of the affected units were treated together until it was gone. In a converted house or a small apartment block, the wall between two units is not a barrier to a bed bug; it is a corridor. The bed bug control and commercial pest control pages cover how that kind of job is scoped for landlords.
The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 survey counts just over a quarter of the county’s occupied homes as rented. Inside the two cities the Bureau’s own figures put the rented share far higher — close to half in Augusta and over half in Waterville — and that is where most of the shared-wall work happens.
Lake country: camps and the long empty season
The same survey counts 6,070 homes in Kennebec held for seasonal, recreational or occasional use. Whether it is a lakeside camp or a second home, an unheated building that nobody visits between autumn and spring is a reliable place for mice to overwinter, and the owner usually finds out on the first visit of the year, when the nesting and droppings are already there. Closing a camp properly — exterior stations set, gaps at the sill and plumbing sealed, soft goods stored in sealed bins — costs less than cleaning one out. See rodent exclusion and, where the insulation has been soiled, attic clean-outs and sanitation.
Ticks: Central Maine is catching up
Maine CDC’s 2024 tickborne illness report describes Central Maine as quickly emerging as a third area of increased Lyme incidence, after the Midcoast and Downeast. Kennebec’s own numbers show it: 295 cases among residents in 2024 at a rate of 229.6 per 100,000, against 125 cases and a rate of 102.2 in 2020. The statewide rate for 2024 was 230.0, so the county now sits squarely at the state average. The report also lists 112 anaplasmosis and 41 babesiosis cases here, plus one of the state’s Powassan virus cases and two cases of spotted fever rickettsiosis.
The UMaine Cooperative Extension Tick Lab’s 2025 report adds the tick-side view. It tested 275 deer ticks sent in from Kennebec County, and 115 of them — 41.8% — carried the Lyme disease bacterium; 13.8% carried Babesia microti. These are ticks people found and posted to the lab, not a field survey, so the numbers show what is out there rather than measuring it precisely.
For a property backing onto woods or field edges, tick control treats the edge habitat on a schedule through the warm months, and the ticks in the yard page covers the habitat work an owner can do alongside it.
Which page covers what
- Augusta — the city page, built around the trailer rat job and burrowing rats.
- Waterville — the city page for landlords and multi-unit bed bug work.
- Rodent control — mice and rats in homes, camps and outbuildings.
- Carpenter ant control — for damp sills and framing in older houses.

Work we have done in Kennebec County
Two confirmed jobs on record here. In Augusta, rats were tunneling under a trailer and getting inside it; exterior bait stations went in, the burrow holes were filled, and the rats were gone. In Waterville, a property-management company called about one unit with bed bugs; the inspection found a heavy infestation that had reached the connecting units, and each affected unit was treated until the bed bugs were eliminated.
Local detail, with its source
- 126,808 residents in 63,521 housing units, with 26.3% of occupied homes rented and 6,070 units (9.6%) held for seasonal or occasional use (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024)
- 295 Lyme disease cases in 2024 at 229.6 per 100,000 residents — effectively the statewide rate of 230.0 — up from 102.2 in 2020 (Maine CDC, 2024 tickborne illness annual report)
- Kennebec was one of three counties with a spotted fever rickettsiosis case in 2024, alongside Oxford and Somerset (Maine CDC, 2024 tickborne illness annual report)
- Of 275 deer ticks from the county tested in 2025, 115 (41.8%) carried the Lyme disease bacterium and 38 (13.8%) carried Babesia microti (UMaine Cooperative Extension Tick Lab, 2025 annual report)
Common questions
Are ticks really a problem this far inland?
Increasingly, yes. Maine CDC's figures show Kennebec's Lyme rate more than doubling between 2020 and 2024, to the point where it now matches the state average. The UMaine Tick Lab found the Lyme bacterium in 41.8% of the county's deer ticks it tested in 2025.
I manage rental buildings in Augusta or Waterville. How do you handle bed bugs?
We inspect the connecting units from the start rather than treating only the one that reported. That is how the Waterville job on record was done, and it is the reason it finished rather than circling back through the building.
Rats are digging under my shed. Do you treat inside or outside?
Outside first. The burrows, the travel routes and whatever is feeding them are all outdoors. Secured exterior stations and filled burrows deal with that; sealing the structure stops them coming in.
